Subject: Your craigslist Ad

One evening, the mother of a newborn and a toddler got on craigslist and saw a simple plea for diapers from the mother of a working family new to the area and in desperate financial times.

She felt she had been led to this message… and one mother’s heart responded to another’s.

They exchanged emails. When the mother arrived at the family’s doorstep with boxes of diapers in her arms, she saw a woman at the door, a loving mother just like her, worn down from the toll life can take.

The mother at the door broke down at the sight of a stranger carrying armloads of Love disguised as boxes of diapers.

Sobbing, she explained she stretched the few diapers she had by changing her daughter only after she had a bowel movement. Otherwise, the beautiful toddler at her side spent her days and nights in a soiled wet, diaper. A working family struggled daily to provide their child with not just food and a home, but the most basic hygiene need – a matter of simple human dignity.

The mother on the doorstep replied gently, “I’m here because God loves you. And, you are not alone.”

Two mothers. One, relieved and grateful, changed her baby with a fresh diaper that night and put her to bed clean and dry for the first time in a long while. The other mother left that home, humbled, saddened and wondering. There is a powerful need here. How can we serve?

She got back on craigslist and was led to another message, posted from a family new to the United States hoping to buy unused diapers – anything cheaper than the store. She and her husband met this family at a gas station. As her husband got out of the car with boxes of diapers to give them, the father in need saw the Ichthys, the Christian symbol, on their car.

“You may not want to give these to us. We are of another faith.” Her husband smiled and assured him, “That makes no difference. Please understand, God commands us to love all of His children.” Tears streaming down his face, the father said he had never been treated so kindly in this country before.

Two fathers, both with a heart for the well-being of their children, were changed forever by a Divine encounter orchestrated by the same Father.

God purposed a larger mission from these encounters. Prayers were answered quickly as they realized there was a way to not only change diapers, but to change lives.

The ministry of diaperLove was born, a big-hearted vision only God could create to supply diapers to any child, to every child in need – Sharing God’s Love one dry behind at a time.

When it comes to finding a way to care for His children, God’s Love covers it.

Uplifted. Up Lifting.

Paying it forward is a beautiful line with a perfect infinite arc, flowing from one person to the next.

A mother of two children emailed diaperLove (a non-profit that provides diapers to children in need) because she and her husband were seriously struggling to pay bills and take care of their family. She also explained that she prays daily for God’s help because she “so badly wants to be able to help others, and in the future knows He is going to bless our income so we can do that.”

When she walked in the door at diaperLove and saw a box of diapers and a box of baby wipes, sitting on the floor with her name on it, she wept. For quite a while.

We have used the phrase “this mother broke down” to describe this now familiar response of relief, gratitude and even joy when those we serve are overwhelmed by the sight of a box of diapers waiting just for their child. Seems too simple to merit tears. Hard to believe it is something to cry over. But if you were not able to change your baby with a clean, dry diaper because you couldn’t afford it – well, just take a moment, close your eyes, and with a full heart, imagine the flood of emotions.

But the truth is, these mothers are not “broke down.” These caring parents are in fact, lifted up, as we are all when being blessed by God’s goodness.

We believe that we are not just changing diapers, we are changing lives. Part of the promise of diaperLove is to encourage paying it forward. These boxes of diapers are not hand outs, they are a hand UP, to lift someone up in a difficult time. Helping out when it is our turn to help out.

So from now on, instead of the phrase, “she broke down,” we will describe more faithfully what is truly happening when God moves in lives. “A grateful mother was uplifted by an act of kindness, inspired to turn around and lift up someone else when it is her turn.”
